Growth in tourism is expected in Myanmar with the relaxation of visa regulations for tourists coming from Asian countries. Since the Japan is included in the list, Myanmar expects more Japanese tourists for the coming year. Citizens from China, South Korea, Japan and India can apply for visas on arrival at the country’s 3 international airports.

According to U HlaMyint, director of international and regional cooperation of the Hotels and Tourism Ministry, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of Japanese visitors after the visa exemptions were granted to tourists from China, South Korea, Japan and India last October 1. He also revealed that the ministry is preparing something that will suit the customs and tastes of visitors.

Some of the measures that are being undertaken include facilitating entry at airports, ensuring that hotels provide security and good service and systematic transportation options. A strategy session was held by the ministry and officials from the private sector to attract more Japanese tourists.

Aside from the increase in the number of Japanese tourists, the ministry also noted an increase in South Korean visitors. This year, there were about 50,000 visitors from South Korea and 80,000 visitors from Japan. Since the peak tourist season starts in December, more visitors are expected to arrive. The decline in tourist numbers from European countries is offset by the increase in Chinese tourists. The Committee for the Development of National Tourism was established with country-specificteams and groups that will handle tourism promotions for regions.
